FAQ's

iBOND Self Etch is the new generation of self-etching adhesives from Heraeus Kulzer with improved formula. iBOND Self Etch combines high bond strength, improved marginal sealing, and virtually no post-operative sensitivity with an easy, fast and more convenient application.

After opening the bottle (or using the first single dose of the package), you can leave it outside the refrigerator until it is empty or expired – whichever comes first.

The iBOND Self Etch bottle has to be shaken prior to use so that all the components are homogeneously distributed in the solution.

3 minutes.

No. The same amount of material is applied with the one-coat application of iBOND Self Etch as with the needed three coats iBOND GLUMA inside, due to iBOND Self Etch´s higher consistency.

Agitation during the dwell time improves demineralization and diffusion of the adhesive in the tooth structure. This increases the quality of the adhesion.

No. Enamel should be roughen or grind before application of iBOND Self Etch to expose aprismatic areas of enamel and achieve a sufficient bond strength. Etching/bonding is less effective on unground enamel.

No. On sclerotic dentin separate etching with phosphoric acid for 30 seconds is recommended.

20 seconds.

No. While welling, a little bit of the acetone of iBOND Self Etch can evaporate. This makes UDMA (hydrophobic) swim on the surface of the solution and 4-META (hydrophilic) go to the bottom. By diving the microbrush in the solution, the components mix again and iBOND Self Etch can be applied as normal. In the tooth there is also a phase separation (gradient).

iBOND Self Etch

  • Adhesive layer: 3-5 µm
  • Hybrid layer: 0.3-0.5 µm
  • The hybrid layer of iBOND Self Etch corresponds to the demineralization depth.

Total-Etch Systems

  • Adhesive layer: 5-20 µm
  • Hybrid layer: 1.5-3 µm
  • Demineralization depth: 30-50 µm

Most important to achieve high bond strength is a complete cross-linking of adhesive with the tooth surface and that is enough adhesive stays on the tooth after air drying. To prevent postoperative sensitivities, it is also important that the hybrid layer corresponds to the demineralization depth.

The reduction of water content and the high amount of monomers in iBOND Self Etch make it easy to evaporate the solvents. The consistency of iBOND Self Etch is higher due to its filler content permitting a homogeneous adhesive layer. This means iBOND Self Etch presents a high user robustness that leads to high bond strength and improved marginal sealing. iBOND Self Etch was tested in lab and clinical tests showing no marginal discolorations over time.

Among other tests, mixed class V cavities were prepared in extracted teeth. Restorations were placed using iBOND Self Etch and Venus. After polishing the teeth were stored for 24 hours in water and were then thermocycled for 10000 cycles. The final dye penetration test showed no staining. An additional clinical test with 6 dentists showed no marginal staining with 56 cases after 8 weeks. First results of clinical studies at the Universities of Florida and Mainz after 3 months show no findings regarding marginal discoloration (see Downloads: Scientific Information).

iBOND Self Etch is not technique sensitive due to its high monomer content, low water content and higher consistency.

The percentage of fillers in iBOND Self Etch is of less than 1%. Fillers are included only to adjust the consistency.

iBOND Self Etch contains monomers that are able to precipitate proteins and close the dentin tubuli internally (similar to GLUMA Desensitizer).

According to our experiences the bond strength is not affected adversely when GLUMA Desensitizer is used prior to the application of iBOND Self Etch. A separate application of GLUMA Desensitizer is not necessary, because iBOND Self Etch already has a desensitizing effect.

iBOND Self Etch was tested with Filtek Supreme, EsthetX, Tetric Ceram, Durafill, Solitaire and Charisma. iBOND and iBOND Self Etch do not stain composites (Source: Heraeus Kulzer, Wehrheim. Data on file).

No! iBOND Self Etch should be used only in combination with materials that can be totally light-cured. Otherwise, there will be an inhibition of the curing process of these composite materials.

Yes. Only some µm of the calcium hydroxide surface will be slightly dissolved.

Acetone carries monomers deep into the tooth surface increasing the hybrid layer and improving bonding. Acetone is also very easy to evaporate and remove from the tooth surface permitting a faster application.

The acetone has evaporated and the material cannot be used anymore. The bottle has to be thrown away.

No! By adding acetone you will never get the right consistency and mixture again. There is no guarantee at all that the bonding will be effective.
